Northern Accelerator has celebrated the completion of the latest Future Founders cohort, bringing together researchers from Durham, Northumbria, Newcastle and the University of Sunderland for a five week delve into research commercialisation.
Future Founders is designed specifically for academics who want to explore the commercial potential of their research. Delivered by innovation and venturing specialists Zuas, the programme covers opportunity diagnosis, idea development, business planning, finances, fundraising and pitching — helping researchers build the confidence and capability to take their ideas forward.
A cohort rich in bold ideas
This cohort demonstrated exceptional breadth of innovation, with final pitches including:
- Green hydrogen and sustainable energy technologies
- Solutions for challenges in the wind energy industry
- Approaches to accelerate drug discovery
- Robotics applied to the yacht industry
The mix of disciplines and institutions highlights the strength and variety of research across Northern Accelerator’s partner universities.
Celebrating progress — and looking ahead
Closing the final session, Jordan Byers, Northern Accelerator Senior Manager, said:
“It’s been fantastic to see how much this cohort has achieved in just five weeks. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment have been inspiring. For many, this is just the beginning of their commercialisation journey, and we’re excited to support them as they take their next steps.”
Many previous Future Founders participants have gone on to launch their own spinout businesses, supported by their university technology transfer teams and Northern Accelerator’s wider commercialisation support.
Inspired to take part? Future cohorts are on the way
We’ll announce more Future Founders cohorts soon. With places available for researchers across Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria and Sunderland Universities. This is a powerful opportunity to turn research into real world impact.
